Encouraged by George Oliver Mondy Jr., a friend and mentor who was New Orleans' first black firefighter, Supt. McDaniels joined the Fire Department in 1969. He devoted 33 years to the NOFD & died of cancer (aged 63) while at River Region Hospice. At the time of his death, he had served for nine years as chairman of the Orleans Parish Communication District, the overseer of the city's 911 system.
